Choosing a Coaching Certification School: A Guide to Identifying Values

Allow our graduate Supraja Ramanjula to share her guide in choosing a coaching certification school for you.

What were your main decisions when deciding which coach certification school to choose?

A unique, internationally accredited life coach certification training program. A good curriculum that includes instruction on working with clients, positive psychology, appreciative inquiry, a strength-based approach, and the art of asking questions. A place where a student can be heard and seen to grow, with good ongoing community support and more.

What do you recommend people look for when choosing a coach certification school?

I see that a lot of people find it challenging to choose a coaching certification school. I get that because I was there once. Yes, I would say it’s tricky because every school has its own marketing spiel explaining why its approach is the best. But you are the one that needs to decide which one is right for you.

I would say do a little bit of research first. Start with which area you want to improve and what type of coach would be ideal for you..

For example, in my case, I wanted to improve on becoming a spiritual relationship coach. Being an Indian-generation Tantric who recently came to the western world, I found it very hard to navigate. Then, I did research and followed my heart. That’s when I found Jay Shetty and his unique approach and deep message. It resonated with my heart. I did a little bit of background check to know who he is, where he came from, and what inspired him. That was when I decided that this is the man I would trust because he knows what it takes to be who he is today. Then, I learned about the Jay Shetty Certification School and I applied.

There will be a lot of people saying a lot of different things, but do what speaks to your heart. Coaching is a beautiful and sacred art, not only to help others but also yourself. It’s a soul’s journey.

What advice would you give yourself if you were starting over to become a life coach?

The best advice I gave myself was to ask myself these powerful questions:

  • Are you ready to change and positively change others’ lives?
  • Do you know why you want to become a coach? And are you ready to put in the work?

I would also like to reinforce the idea that everyone has their own unique coaching method. And once you start developing the method that is unique to you, nothing prevents you from following your path to helping people.

What would you say to someone who is considering which coach training school to attend?

I would first encourage you to look into your own values and see if they align with your choice of school. This is important because if you are in a place where your values are not aligned, you will feel out of place and won’t have the opportunity to get an insight into your own potential and unique factor. After a lot of research, I landed on the Jay Shetty Certification School. You will go through your own  journey of personal development when choosing a coaching certification school program, so it is good to take your time and not hurry during that period of self-development and growth.

Nonetheless, here are some points to check about your school:

  • Check their international accreditation.
  • Know the person leading the school.
  • Know their code of ethics.
  • Know their purpose and intention for the school.
  • Check their credibility.
  • Check if they have a facility to provide ongoing support.
